Travelling as a Couple: Our Experience

Myself and Bryan have been to seven countries and eleven cities together with many more destinations coming up over this year and next. Neither of us has ever travelled solo and if we have travelled without each other it was with family before we met. We want to share our experience of travelling as a couple with you to give you an insight into what it’s like for us and also to give you some tips on your journey if you decide to travel as a couple.

Companionship:

Having someone else to travel with, especially your partner is great and provides companionship. You have someone to chat to all the time and have a laugh with meaning you will never have a moment where you feel alone.

Lots of Laughs:

Myself and Bryan always have fun together and throughout our travels have had a lot of laughs, such as the time we got caught in a thunder storm in Berlin and the roof blew off the tour bus. It’s memories like this that excite us for our future travels and I know that if that happened when we were alone we wouldn’t have found it as funny. Sometimes having something to share with someone makes it so much better.

Money:
Traveling with a partner can ease the cost of travelling soooo much. Splits on hotels and meals mean you never have to bring a huge amount of money on your travels, unless you want to of course! Myself and Bryan don’t stay in hostels as it’s just not for us so we find travelling together and staying in nice hotels manageable as the cost is half for each of us.

Arguments:

Honestly, arguments can happen when you are travelling with your partner so do expect that! While myself and Bryan have had no major fall outs, we have, at times, been very cranky with each other. This could be due to tiredness from an early flight or if one of us isn’t feeling so great and so on. The key thing for us is to not take it personal and understand each other and communicate, so don’t let this put you off!

Things to do:

When travelling as a couple, both might not want to do the same things so we always compromise. If Bryan wants to do something that I’m not too fussed on I will go anyways because he does the same for me. It’s fair and we always end up having a great time together so keep this in mind if you are travelling with a partner as it’s about the experience for both of you.

Safety:

For some reason, myself and Bryan always feel safer in another country when we are together. This is definitely a benefit for us when travelling and while nothing has happened to us on our travels so far we definitely find safety in each other.

Top Tips for Travelling as a Couple:

  • Compromise
  • Don’t take crankiness personally
  • If an argument occurs, talk it out as communication is key.
  • Enjoy each other’s company and have fun
  • Try new things together as this is a great experience to share.
  • As always, stay safe, even when you have a travel partner!

Happy Travels,

Nicole

  1. I can identify with those points. I have travelled a fair bit in life alone so I cherish having my husband to share it with. There are times when I do travel alone even now – when he is busy working – and even though I enjoy it there is always him missing from the picture. I miss even his moments of grumpiness ๐Ÿ˜‰

You two are adorable! Reminds me of travelling with my husband back before we were married – mid-80s! I still love travelling with him. After all these years, we have modified the compromise /do whatever the other person wants to letting each other do one or two things on their own. For instance, we were just in Florence and I usually tire of sightseeing by around 4 or 5. One day, I just wanted to go back to the hotel, put my feet up and maybe have a glass of wine. He wasn’t done – I went back, he spent about an hour and a half more wandering around and taking photos. Then, when we met up again, we were both happy ๐Ÿ™‚

You both work in Banks? Read on your other posts about bank holidays being a major part of your holidays? I am also a banker so it makes your travels all the more interesting.
